For a good cause: Turbine Kreuzberg supports One Warm Winter and High Snobiety in collecting donations

Dec. 13, 2019

Berlin is not only a base for hip digital agencies like us, but like many metropolitan areas around the world also a hotspot for homelessness, gentrification and poverty.

Every year we support the One Warm Winter initiative pro bono with digital services for their campaigns. On December 1, 2019, One Warm Winter organized a charity flea market in cooperation with High Snobiety, whose visitors were able to buy branded clothing at low prices. All proceeds — over 15,000 euros — were donated by One Warm Winter to charitable organizations helping the homeless.

In order to boost turnover at the flea market and make the day’s proceeds visible, our task was to compile payment data from Sumup POS terminals in such a way that the current donation status could be followed live on the big screen and at the end of the event an individual invoice could be made for the merchants.

The donation dashboard

Within a week, we developed a dashboard application in React (Grommet) that receives real-time data from a node.js backend (hapi.js). Since Sumup does not provide an API to retrieve a daily balance, we synchronized the successful individual transactions of merchants against a MongoDB Atlas cluster and calculated the current donation status live. Deploying on now.sh and Netlify was a breeze thanks to the API-centric backend and the static dashboard SPA.

In one afternoon, the initiative managed to raise more than 15,000 euros. We are happy to be able to make a small contribution to making the lives of people who haven’t had as much luck as we have a little bit better.
